Kindness Is a Skill, Not a Mood

Being kind is not something you either are or aren't. It is a set of things you can practise — starting with noticing.

People often talk about kindness as though it were a personality — some people have it, some do not. That is not really how it works. Most unkindness is not cruelty. It is not noticing.

Noticing comes first

Someone sitting alone at lunch. Someone who has gone quiet in a group. Someone carrying too much. Kindness usually begins with spotting a situation that other people walked past.

Then asking instead of assuming

The most useful sentence is often the simplest: 'Are you okay?' or 'Do you want company?' You do not have to fix anything. Asking is already the kind part.

Empathy is not agreeing with someone. It is understanding what it is like to be them.
